World Liberty Financial (WLFI), the crypto venture linked to the Trump family, threatened to sue Justin Sun after the billionaire investor alleged the project had concealed a blacklist backdoor inside its token smart contract. The accusation and legal threat, exchanged publicly on social media, mark a significant rupture between WLFI and one of its most prominent backers.
Sun, founder of the Tron blockchain and an early investor in WLFI, claimed the token contract contained undisclosed code that could allow insiders to blacklist wallet addresses and freeze funds. WLFI disputed the allegation and responded with a warning that it would pursue legal remedies. Neither party disclosed the specific contractual provisions at the center of the dispute.

The blowup arrives as WLFI faces broader pressure from investors unhappy with the project’s direction and governance. Critics have long pointed to the project’s lopsided token distribution, which funneled a large share of supply to insiders and affiliates, and questioned whether retail investors had meaningful recourse.
Smart contract backdoors, sometimes called “admin keys” or “owner functions,” are a known risk in DeFi. Projects that retain privileged access to freeze or seize tokens can expose holders to censorship or loss without judicial oversight. If Sun’s allegation holds up to technical scrutiny, it would represent a serious disclosure failure.
For a project that raised hundreds of millions of dollars partly on the strength of its Trump-family association, the public fight with Sun is a reputational liability. It also draws fresh attention to the legal and structural questions that have followed WLFI since its launch.
